Science Class 1A visited UCD on Friday 21 April. They were hosted by Dr John Baugh, programme director of the BSC physiology department, along with four post graduate students. After a brief lecture on heart anatomy and physiology the students broke into groups and were connected up to sensors to take EMG readings. An EMG is a electromyography which measures the amount of electrical activity in a muscle during activity. Once finished the students were further tested using ECG. An ECG tests the electrical activity of the heart. They were tested in different positions to determine whether their heart rate increased when the stood up from a lying position. It was a very enjoyable and informative afternoon.
Thanks to Mr Stewart for organising, and to Ms Flynn, Ms Hogan and Ms Broderick for accompanying the students.
